| Robert Graysmith came upon "Donald Jeff Andrews"
[again, this is an altered name] via an anonymous phone call. The caller gave him some
information on "Andrews" and told him that this was the suspect that Napa
detective Ken Narlow was really interested in. The caller told Graysmith that "Andrews" is a big film buff and had a friend who was storing some old film cans for him. It was in these that the caller believed "Andrews" was hiding the evidence of the Zodiac murders [such as weapons, the remaining portion of Stine's bloody shirt, etc.]. The caller also told him that he believed these film canisters were booby trapped and could not be opened or they would explode. "Andrews" took the film canister back from his friend in 1972. Inspector Toschi of SFPD had cleared "Andrews" as a suspect based on the fact that his handwriting didn't match Zodiac's. Some of the evidence against "Andrews" included: - He's a Gilbert and Sullivan fan who quoted lyrics to friends occasionally. Zodiac quoted Gilbert and Sullivan at least twice in his letters. - "Andrews" had code training. - He had a sewing machine in his home. It is commonly believed that Zodiac sewed the handmade costume he used at Lake Berryessa himself. - "Andrews" collected classic films. Zodiac made reference to a couple of classic films in his letters, including "The Most Dangerous Game" and "Phantom of the Opera." - He is ambidextrous. It is believed that Zodiac was ambidextrous. - His physcial description was similar to Zodiac's, especially in that he wore rimmed glasses held on by a band. - According to a source, he had confided to his friends: "What I have is better than sex." - "Andrews" had a photo darkroom and a teletype machine. Zodiac used a teletype machine on at least a few of his letters. - "Andrews" was a Navy man. It was commonly believed that Zodiac was involved with the military and probably the Navy specifically. - A friend of "Andrews" made movie posters for the theater he owned. The handwriting the friend used on his posters was very similar to Zodiac's handwriting and written in black felt-tip pen. "Andrews" could have possibly imitated this handwriting style if he was the Zodiac. - According to a friend, "Andrews" had left the state from 1975-1978. During that time, no Zodiac letters were received. - A 1969 photo of "Andrews" was very similar to the composite drawing made of Zodiac at about the same time. - "Andrews" had lived in the same district of San Francisco as Darlene Ferrin and her first husband. In fact, he only lived a block away from them. There were doubts about "Andrews," however. The three teenagers who witnessed the Stine killing all agreed that he was too old and too fat. Also, as with the other suspects, much of the evidence against him was purely circumstantial. "Andrews" has always been Napa detective Ken Narlow's favorite suspect. Narlow is one of the leading five or so investigators in the Zodiac investigation. At last report, "Andrews" was living in the Castro district of San Francisco [as of 1987] and is still probably considered a suspect. |
