Swordfish
June.15.2001
Well I finally got off my lazy ass and checked out this movie.
Then again, that's not true, I saw it on a Friday afternoon when I
should have been at home working. But I just needed a break. The movie
has been in theatres at this point for a couple of weeks, but it wasn't
playing in my area [Granville and Robson] so I haven't had the
opportunity to take a peek. Well today, I snuck on over to Tinseltown
on Pender street. They have a big ass theatre there, with some nice big
screens, and very lax security, so you can sneak into a couple of
movies for the price of one. Just last week I saw Startup.com
and I didn't like it much so I took it upon myself to see A Knights
Tale and I felt some retribution. That movie didn't make me do cart
wheels or change my political point of view either, but two for one,
who can beat that. BUT... I'm here to talk about Swordfish so
let's get to the task at hand.
I have my usual gaggle of pals who
see movies and let me know what they think. Lee, Jeepguy, Jim, and
Calvin. People of that ilk. Well they all told me that this movie is
actually "not bad". Now when they say "not bad" this usually means, it
sucked, but there were breasts and explosions in it, and that's exactly
what this movie is. Actually, it's a very entertaining piece of film.
Paul Oakenfold did the soundtrack and he's as damn cool as it gets when
it comes to music, although he was a curious choice. I'm guessing this
is his first soundtrack. In addition to Oakenfold, we have Wolverine in
the film [Hugh Jackman for the pop culture reference challenged]
This is actually the kind of movie I like. Not just one big
movie star to carry the entire movie and some little lesser known co
stars to pick up the slack. We have a genuine good cast here to fill in
all the spots. The cast included John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Vinnie
Jones, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle and Sam Shepard. I would like to say
tho... I like Don Cheadle but they really didn't need him in this
movie. He was great in Boogie Nights, but in this movie
his role was very small and there wasn't much he could do with it. It
was sort of the same character he played in Traffic, and the
same type of character that we saw Delroy Lindo play in "Gone in 60
Seconds" Of course in that movie, Delroy was asking Nicolas
Cage the question "What are the two best car thieves in the world
doing in L.A. at the same time? Just coincidence?" and in this
movie Don Cheadle is asking Hugh Jackman "What are the two
best hackers in the world doing in L.A. at the same time? Just
coincidence?". I swear it's the exact same line. Just now in
writing this article I thought, "wow that is a coincidence" so I did a
little imdb.com research and found that Dominic Sena was the same
director of not only Swordfish, but Gone in 60 Seconds.
Ha, that is actually making me laugh, funny what paying attention to
the small things and a little research gets ya. Actually it gets you
jack shit, it's not like I just made 20 bucks or something... oh well,
I pass the knowledge on to you, the reader. Don't you feel blessed? A
little golden nugget of trivia that will get you a free drink at some
small bar in Banff... or not. Back to the badly written Cop Characters, I guess we can watch for
this same character in all of Dominic Senas movies [god I hope not]
Well this movie is a LOT like Gone in 60 Seconds now that I think about
it, and I guess I'd have to say, if you liked that movie, you'll like
this one, since in my opinion, this one is the better of the two. It
wasn't the best movie of the summer, and don't be in a hurry to see it,
but it is entertaining and worth the cash.
