DiVX vs. DVD

Not an age old argument. But about to become one.

Oct.4.2001

I've been doing a lot of work on the ol computer lately. And folks, if you're like me, you're 5'10 and you're name is Clint Vander Klok. Ha, but seriously. I've been doing a lot of plugging away on the old computer here, getting work done and generally getting things taken care of. I have a Pentium 933, 512 megs of ram and about 200 gigs of storage space. Had this system now for over a year, my good pal Lee Ingram built it for me for pennies a glass. He basically gave the system to me in exchange for a bunch of favors that I did for him and something he called "cash". So, as I plug away on the ol system here, catching up on work and creating useless websites, such as the one you're reading, I find myself starved for a little entertainment. What I did with this system was hook up a second monitor I had lying around and voila, dual monitor system. Take a peek at a webcam grab I did and you'll get the idea.
So what I find myself doing is running Adobe Photoshop in the main monitor and Frontpage 2000 or Dreamweaver in the second. Or most often I am just doing some editing of some kind and I like to play a DiVX in the second monitor at full screen. What exactly IS DiVX you may ask? Explanation can be found HERE. If you already know, cool and the gang. Anyway, I just wanted to put in my two cents. I have found recently that DiVX can be more hassle than it is worth, but while working, nothing beats a "borrowed" copy of The Ladies Man, In fact, if you ask me, that movie is the very reason they invented DiVX. I downloaded this movie and it was so horrible and non funny if you will, that I would have been mad if I had paid to see it in the theatre or rented it from the video store. I actually had a ticket to see this movie at a sneak preview just before it came out. Of course my eternally late girlfriend at the time made sure we missed it. It's a long story, but this specific ex girlfriend was so late that she missed her own birthday, and I'm talking about the very first one. But I digress [I love saying that, even when I don't use it right]

But DiVX is just such a great way to take a look at a movie while you're working. I certainly wouldn't recommend it as an alternative to owning your favorite movies. There is no way I'd rather watch The Usual Suspects on the computer rather than my big ol Sony Wega, but in special cases such as The Wedding Planner, accept no alternative.

Here is a screen cap of The Ladies Man I took today just to show you how great the quality is. This is about half the size of the actual movie, and you can run it at full screen and you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference between it, and an actual DVD. Now I REALLY don't wanna get sued here. SO I'm not going to admit to ANYTHING. But we all know George Lucas hasn't been very forthcoming with his release of Star Wars on DVD, BUT he HAS released his 3 greatest films on Laser Disc. Now I'm not saying that maybe having a really good high quality rip of these movies on DiVX are better than VHS, but holy shit are they ever. I mean, I heard they are. I would GUESS that they probably look something like this, but I can't be certain. Yeah that would be something to have all three, on DiVX from laser disc rips. The special editions too.

I bet they would look "something" like The pictures on the next page. Go ahead, done be shy. Take a look
